John Hutton: a toxic Tory collaborator

Issue No. 2282

One former Labour cabinet minister had no trouble working out which side he was on.

John Hutton—or Baron Hutton of Furness, as we are now meant to call him—has declared that the government’s pension proposals are “perfectly credible”.

Hutton is a scab. He took a job in the Tories’ coalition to head an inquiry into public sector pensions.

That inquiry is being used as the basis for the attacks on pensions—as Hutton knew it would be.

That’s despite the fact that Hutton’s report predicts the cost of public sector pensions will steadily drop as a proportion of GDP in coming decades.

Now Hutton claims his original report was “too optimistic”—and that the cost of public pensions needs to be driven down further for the sake of making the British economy competitive.

Hutton is a former legal adviser to the bosses’ CBI and now sits on the board of a US nuclear power company.

Many strikers whose unions give money to Labour will be asking why the party tolerates the presence of these traitors in its ranks.
