Essex student: occupation in solidarity with N30

by Rob Brown, Occupy Essex University
Issue No. 2282

Students at the University of Essex have occupied a lecture theatre in solidarity with the 30 November strikes.

We stand alongside our brothers and sisters in the fight against cuts to education and pensions, and the privatisation of education and the public sector.

Locally, we have demanded a reduction in rent prices, the restoration of services to accommodation and a living wage for university staff.

We also advocate free education for all and have demanded a public statement from our vice chancellor condemning the White Paper and the rise in fees.

We returned from the 1,000-strong strike demonstration in Colchester on Wednesday, and voted unanimously to occupy the lecture theatre with immediate effect.

Thirty students are staying overnight and many more attend meetings during the day. We have a social space in which to discuss our vision of the future of education.

We screen films and invite speakers to come and talk to us, and plan to have a live music event in the near future.

We have been in contact with other university occupations throughout the country and have been touched by the solidarity we have been shown.

We also had a video link with Occupy DC in which we traded ideas and experiences.

We called a day of action for Tuesday, and have received messages of support and solidarity from many other universities.
