Tories plan DVLA jobs massacre

The Tories have announced plans to close 39 local Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) offices. The announcement—just two weeks before Christmas—puts 1,200 jobs at risk.

The government says it will launch a consultation with staff and unions today (Tuesday). But the PCS union says the decision “already appears to have been taken”.

A PCS statement says that industrial action to fight the closures is “very likely”.

The union claimed last year to have uncovered secret talks about the closures. But managers denied the accusation.

The union put in Freedom of Information requests to find out more about the closure plans. But these were turned down.

Paul Williams, from the PCS national executive, spoke to Socialist Worker.

“The government says it wants a ‘conversation’ about this,” he said. “But this is not a conversation.

“They want to close everything by 2013. I don’t think there’s any doubt about strikes being called over this.”

Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the PCS, said, “DVLA senior managers have previously denied that this is what they were planning.

“So to announce it just two weeks before Christmas is insulting and devastating for staff.”
