Partial reprieve for Bombardier

Issue No. 2284

The threatened Bombardier train factory in Derby will stay open for a while longer. It won a £188 million contract to build 130 carriages for the Southern train operator franchise.

The deal involves an £80 million subsidy from the government. Unions welcomed the contract but warned it will not be enough to save jobs.

Bombardier threatened to cut 1,400 jobs last year when it lost a £1.5 billion contract with Thameslink.
