Why imperialists are worried about Scottish independence

Issue No. 2285

David Cameron’s demand for a referendum on Scottish independence within 18 months was a cynical attempt to protect the unity of the British state.

The people of Scotland should decide on independence—not the Westminster government.

Socialist Worker backs independence for Scotland. This might seem like a contradiction as we are internationalists.

But we don’t back independence in order to line up behind the nationalists of the Scottish National Party.

The UK is an imperialist power that pillages the world’s resources.

A yes vote in the referendum would weaken the British state.

That’s why Cameron and friends are so desperate to preserve unity.

We should be under no illusions. An independent Scotland would not be a socialist Scotland.

Scottish rulers will still exploit Scottish workers—there is no common cause between the two.

The key division between people across the world is class. Scottish workers will still need to fight their bosses.

And workers in Scotland, Wales and England and beyond will still need unity in struggle against our rulers.

But the break up of our “kingdom” would be one small victory against its rotten record.
