Brutal slum eviction in Brazil

Issue No. 2287

More than 2,000 police forcibly evicted residents of the Pinheirinho slum district of Sao Jose dos Campos near Sao Paulo, Brazil, early last Sunday morning.

Police used tear gas and rubber bullets to prevent anyone returning to their homes.

In the days before the eviction residents organised protests to defend their homes. Pinheirinho was home to more than 6,000 people.
