Arab League's Syria mission crisis

Issue No. 2287

A deadlock is developing in Syria as the Gulf Cooperation Council and Saudi Arabia withdrew their observers from the Arab League mission to the country.

Other countries plan to stay for another month.

The UN security council has discussed Syria at length, with the US and Israel lobbying for intervention.

Meanwhile protests against the regime are spreading. Strikes have shut down many universities, shops and markets.
