US marine pleads guilty over Haditha killings - faces three months imprisonment

Issue No. 2287

A US marine has pled guilty to a charge of “dereliction of duty” in relation to the massacre in Haditha, Iraq, in 2005. He was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault.

Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich is the last marine to be charged with the unprovoked attack, when US troops murdered 24 Iraqis. He faces a maximum three months in prison.

He told his troops to “shoot first and ask questions later”. Seven other marines have escaped prosecution.
