Melvyn Bragg on Class and Culture

Issue No. 2291

This three-part documentary looks at how class became a central issue in British culture as the 20th century unfolded.

It features Ken Loach, Fay Weldon, Alan Bleasdale and Irvine Welsh among others.

The first episode looks at how the First World War undermined class divisions in culture, and how this played out in the interwar years.

The second episode, broadcast on 2 March, looks at the “angry young men” of 1950s theatre and the early 1960s writers and artists that came in their wake.

The final part on 9 March covers the 1980s to today and asks if “open, accessible culture” now masks deeper divisions between the rich and poor.
