Big rise in strike days last year - in both public and private sectors

Issue No. 2291

The number of strike days was higher last year than at any time since 1990, according to the Office for National Statistics.

The figures shows that 1.4 million working days were “lost” because of industrial action in 2011.

The number of strike days in the private sector in 2011 was double the corresponding number for 2010. Private sector strikes now stand at the highest level since 2004.
