Fury as councils set cuts budgets

Issue No. 2292

The Green Party passed its first-ever council budget last week in Brighton—with £17 million of cuts.

Fifty protesters from local unions and Brighton Stop the Cuts lobbied the meeting.

Around 15 Greens, who held a curious, semi-separate protest against Labour and the Tories. Green activist Tom Lines defended the party’s decisions.

“If we set an illegal budget, you get Eric Pickles disbanding the council,” he said. “In a sense our councillors are manning the defences.”

But Green voter Glen Williams, who joined the anti-cuts demo, said, “I find it absolutely incredible that they’re implementing these cuts. They’re going to lose their own support.”

Up to 50 people, including some Labour councillors, protested at Nottinghamshire council’s budget meeting last week.

Up to 30 people lobbied a council meeting in Brent, north west London, on Monday of this week.
