Tories get in a pickle in Leeds

Issue No. 2292

Hundreds of anti-Tory protesters gathered in central Leeds last Saturday to tell communities secretary Eric Pickles he was not welcome.

Ronnie Draper, general secretary of BFAWU, the bakers’ union, told the marchers, “Pickles epitomises everything that’s evil about the Tories.”

Local branches of the GMB and Unison unions led the march. One GMB union steward said, “Even though my union hasn’t called us out, I’ll be showing solidarity on 28 March.”

There was rapturous applause when she pledged, “I will not cross a picket line.”
