Socialist wins over a quarter of the vote in UCU general secretary election

Issue No. 2292

Mark Campbell, the UCU Left candidate in the union’s general secretary election, has won 27 percent of the vote.

Mark is an activist and socialist who has played a key role in the fight to defend public sector pensions and against education cuts.

He stood on a platform of escalating the battle to defend workers’ rights and education, and of increasing workers’ involvement in the union.

Mark said, “I’d like to thank everyone who supported me in the election. The result shows that a sizeable section of union members want to see a strong fight in defence of our pensions, jobs and education.

“The key thing now is to get the best possible vote in the union’s consultation on whether to strike on 28 March to defend pensions. United action can stop the government’s attacks.”

UCU Left also stood several candidates for national officer positions and for the union’s national executive. These results are due out over the next few days.
