Amanpreet Kaur is an Indian lesbian whose application for asylum has been denied. She was due to be deported on Thursday of last week.
Activists immediately started issuing press releases and emailing home secretary Theresa May.
Amanpreet’s deportation flight was cancelled—but she could still be deported at any time. Amanpreet fears that she faces rape and torture if she is returned to India.
But authorities in Britain are refusing to accept that she is a lesbian or to take her asylum application seriously.
Amanpreet married her partner Dara in Yarl’s Wood detention centre, located near Heathrow airport.
Amanpreet suffers from mental illness and has attempted to take her own life inside Yarl’s Wood.
She reports that she has been mistreated by officers there. Amanpreet was admitted to hospital but later sent back to Yarl’s Wood without medication.
The authorities are refusing to accept that she has serious mental health problems.
David Cameron has tried to portray his government as being LGBT friendly.
But the detention and deportation of LGBT asylum seekers continues.
