Around 70 campaigners demonstrated outside Southwark town hall in south London last week as the Labour-led council passed a budget with £18 million of cuts.

The cuts include the closure of an adult day centre, a children’s centre and several youth clubs in the borough.

By 2016 the council will have lost a third of its total budget, leaving only statutory services in place.

Council leader Peter John claims that he will “spread the pain” across the council.

But campaigners and council workers in Southwark are determined that any “pain” shall be felt by the government—not local people.
