Students hound Tory minister in Portsmouth

David Willetts, the multi-millionaire minister cutting access to higher education for the poorest, spoke at Portsmouth university debating society last Friday.

But he had to enter through the back fire escape, flanked by police and a nervous looking member of Conservative Future, the Tories’ youth organisation.

Protesters were there to greet the minister including students, Portsmouth Against the Cuts Together activists and Occupy Portsmouth.

Willetts tried to hide from the protest by abandoning his motorcade and donning a flat cap. But the protesters caught up with him and taunted him with chants of “Bring back EMA, make the greedy bankers pay” and “Where’s your workfare gone?”.

Willetts refused to answer any questions from protesters and said he was “looking forward to a good debate with Portsmouth students”.

However there was no respite for the minister inside the debating chamber.

Flanked by two bouncers, with police sitting around the crowd, Willetts was attacked over the NHS, the economy, unemployment and education.
