Defend lecturer Cherry Hopton

Issue No. 2293

A lecturer at Angus College in Scotland has been suspended after objecting to a sexist event.

Cherry Hopton objected after the college decided to give all women a red rose to mark International Women’s Day.

The head of human resources asked Cherry to meet in private to discuss the matter. Cherry said she wanted notice of the meeting and the right to bring a union rep.

But the human resources head demanded a private meeting. When Cherry refused he told her she was suspended.

Jackie Howie, deputy principal at the college, told Socialist Worker that it was an internal staff issue and she would not comment further.

Rush messsages of support to EIS-FELA union branch secretary Ann Petrie at ann.petrie@angus.ac.uk and copy to cherryhopton@gmail.com and the principal at john.burt@angus.ac.uk

Supporters of Cherry Hopton have set up an online petition to demand her reinstatement. You can sign it here.
