Twelve days of striking for Swindon hospital workers

by Linda Nunns
Issue No. 2294

Cleaning and catering workers at Great Western hospital in Swindon struck for five days from Thursday of last week.

The workers, members of the GMB union, are angry at a culture of bullying, corruption and racism at Carillion, the contractor that employs them.

Many of the women have been employed there for seven to ten years and say things have changed for the worse in the past year.

One worker said, “Our hours had been cut and holidays curtailed but we are determined to win.”

The latest strike is an escalation of their action.

The workers plan to walk out for a further seven days from Saturday of this week.

Protests have been organised by GMB outside other Carillion sites in the region, including the new Southmead hospital being built in Bristol.
