Teachers' strike called off after legal threat

Issue No. 2294

The NUT union has called off a planned strike after employers threatened a legal challenge to the ballot.

NUT members in sixth form colleges outside London were set to strike from lunchtime on Thursday of this week.

This follows a half-day strike by NUT members in London sixth form colleges last month.

The dispute is over attacks on pay and conditions and funding cuts.

It was wrong to call off the strike. The Unite union faced a legal challenge from building bosses during the recent electricians’ dispute—and won in court.

But unions must also be prepared to defy the anti-union laws if necessary.
