Crossrail climbs down on landmark

Issue No. 2294

Campaigners in North Kensington are celebrating after victory in an eight-month campaign to save a local landmark from demolition.

Local bed-making co-op Big Table, and the Victorian building it occupies, were set to go to make room for an electricity substation as part of the Crossrail project.

This would have caused job losses.

The campaign gathered 3,000 names on a petition, held several large public meetings and blockaded Crossrail lorries.

Local trade unionist John Simmance said, “This shows that by organising together we can win.”
