Walkout at post depot

Issue No. 2294

Postal workers in Bridgwater, Somerset, walked out unofficially for three hours last Thursday after a worker was sacked for taking “too much” time off sick.

The 100 workers struck from 9am that day until noon, when CWU union officials were assured that the worker’s appeal hearing will be moved forward.

Colleagues say the worker’s personal circumstances have not been taken into account. The union plans a ballot if the appeal is lost.

Bosses have backed down over closing the Royal Mail delivery office in Halstead, Essex.

Postal workers in the CWU union have fought alongside local people for a year to keep the town’s office.

Royal Mail had planned to move its work to Sudbury in Suffolk. It will now stay open.
