Eyewitness: Israel’s brutal attack inflames anger in Gaza

Israel has been raining bombs down on Gaza once more. The latest assault began on Friday of last week when Israel assassinated Zuhair al-Qaissi and his son‑in‑law Mahmoud Hanini for allegedly planning a terrorist attack against Israel. A missile was fired at their car.

The Palestinian death toll has reached 25 while dozens more are injured. Nayef Shaaban, aged 15, died in hospital on Monday after an Israeli air strike hit his school. Another five children were left severely injured.

These airstrikes have been answered with rocket attacks from the resistance. A ceasefire has now been agreed between some sections of the Palestinian resistance and Israel.

But many Palestinians are frustrated that they are expected to sit back and watch as they lose their loved ones.

Weam, a university student, said, “Israel has intercepted at least 70 percent of the rockets we fired. It seems unlikely they will cause enough damage to halt Israel’s aggression against us.

“But who am I to tell an orphaned child or a widowed mother that her family and her people don’t have the right to self-defence that Israel so freely exercises?”

The latest attacks on the strip are the most aggressive since Israel’s three week war on Gaza in 2008 in which over 1,000 Palestinians died. Israel bombed the strip extensively and then invaded it.

Abu Haseera, recently released in a prisoner exchange deal with Israel, said, “I was in Israeli prison for 34 years when I was released last November.

“Already six of my friends who were released as part of the same deal have been rearrested or killed.

“I know my release is temporary—and so did the Israeli government when it took part in the exchange.

“They renege on their every word, work outside every law.How am I to believe that peace is their intention?”
