Doonesbury goes into battle for Texas abortion rights

by Sadie Robinson
Issue No. 2294

A row has erupted over a newspaper cartoon strip portraying a woman seeking an abortion in Texas.

Right wingers have denounced Garry Trudeau’s Doonesbury comic as a scandal. Some US newspapers have refused to print it. But the real scandal is the way that some US states are making it harder for women to access abortion services.

Women who want an abortion in Texas and some other US states must have a sonogram that will pick up the heartbeat of the foetus.

This is to try and pressure women into continuing the pregnancy. It often involves forcing women to have an invasive vaginal examination.

Trudeau’s cartoon strip highlights the difficulties and disgusting attitudes women face when trying to access abortion. He is right to do so.
