Is privatisation a fire hazard?

Issue No. 2295

Firefighters in Blackburn, Lancashire, had to travel 50 yards to put out a blaze last week—in their new fire station.

The new building is part of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project to build 16 new fire stations in the North West of England.

But smouldering wires in the roof space caused an electrical fault and a fire. The new building also has a highly flammable grassed roof.

Firefighters will be expected to work in this building, across the road from their existing station, from next month.
