Workers denounce 'witch hunt' and say defend Ray Smith

Issue No. 2296

Unite union members are calling on the union’s general secretary, Len McCluskey, to drop an investigation into Unite activist Ray Smith.

Ray is a longstanding activist in the North East of England. Now a Unite union official has accused Ray of breaching certain union rules.

Ray told Socialist Worker, “The charges are very vague.

“I have said I’m happy to cooperate. But unless there are specific allegations with supporting evidence it’s impossible to defend myself.”

Unite members are circulating an open letter to McCluskey on Ray’s case.

It points out that Ray played a role in supporting electricians in their recent dispute.

It reads, “You have rightly gone on record to condemn the politically motivated witch hunts that have taken place in other unions.

“We think there is no place in our union for such things either and that’s why we call on you to drop the investigation against Ray.”
