Mass defiance over Ireland's 'poll tax'

Issue No. 2297

Some 10,000 people protested against a 100 euro household charge in Ireland last Saturday.

The Campaign Against Household and Water Taxes called the protest at the Fine Gael party conference.

Protesters shouted, “Shame on you!” as Fine Gael delegates tried to get into the convention centre.

Hundreds of thousands of people have refused to pay the poll tax-style charge.

People Before Profit TD (MP) Richard Boyd Barrett attacked the “savage austerity” measures and said the government was “planning worse, a second bailout”.

“This state was founded by a revolution of the people. We need a new, 21st century revolution,” he said.
