Syria: Assad won’t call off his troops

Issue No. 2298

Moves to impose a Western-brokered ceasefire in Syria have collapsed after president Bashar al-Assad insisted the opposition be forced to obey the ceasefire too.

The United Nations says that up to 9,000 people have been killed during Assad’s attempts to suppress the year long uprising in Syria.

The bombardment of Homs and other opposition areas has continued unabated.

The conflict threatens to spill into the wider region, with reports shots were fired across the border with Turkey into refugee camps.
