Bahrain: Queen’s invite to dictator

Issue No. 2298

The queen has invited the king of Bahrain to her Jubilee jamboree.

The dictator, who continues to preside over a brutal crackdown on democracy protests in the country, will dine with the royal family and other international dignitaries.

People in Bahrain have continued their protests for over a year.

One of them, prominent human rights activist Abdulhadi al‑Khawaja, is in a critical condition after being on hunger strike for two months.

Al-Khawaja was arrested after taking part in democracy protests and is now serving a life sentence in prison.

Even the Formula One grand prix is in danger as teams have said they are “uncomfortable” at the idea of Bahrain hosting the race.
