Some teachers wanted the union to launch a more urgent fight to stop academies. Annette Pryce said, “If you blink, you’ll miss an academy conversion. It’s time to get out the big guns—it’s time to fight.”
Stephanie King from Derby said, “I’m sick of waiting politely for the attacks. Let’s fight them together now.”
Yogita Patel, a Birmingham delegate involved in a campaign to fight academies, said, “We have just completed an indicative ballot for strikes across Birmingham. Now we have to get together and strike against the bullies in the Department for Education.”
Rachel Thomas spoke for a motion calling for maximum coordination of strikes against academies—including coordinated national strikes.
She said, “Downhills campaigners and those fighting in Birmingham have given us a voice. We have to have a strategy now.”
