Sergeant Buzfuz’s history lesson

It’s a brave band who opens an album with a seven minute dirge attacking the venality and hypocrisy of a swathe of early popes.

To build on the theme for the entire album shows a refreshing degree of commitment.

Go to the Devil and Shake Yourself is unlikely to set the charts on fire—which is a pity.

The subject matter is interesting if relentless. Musically it moves on from folk to something more like The Fall or trance rock.

The band breaks off its narrative in the 14th century with three warring popes. For better or worse Buzfuz promise a sequel to bring us up to date.
