Forced academy ballot underway at Downhills

Issue No. 2299

Teachers at Downhills Primary School in Haringey, north London, are balloting for strikes against government plans to force the school to become an academy.

The ballot of NUT union members over potential changes to pay and conditions began on Monday of this week. The union is considering coordinating action across different schools in opposition to academies.

A previous indicative ballot of teachers at Downhills found unanimous backing for strikes against the plans. There is also enormous opposition to the plans among parents.

Janet Lallysmith, a parent in the campaign against the plan, said that, “The parents are supportive of the teachers being balloted for industrial action”.

A yes vote in the ballot could see rolling strikes throughout the summer term.
