BMW workers reject pay offer and could strike

Issue No. 2299

Workers at BMW’s Mini plant in Oxford could be set to strike for the first time in 28 years after overwhelmingly rejecting a pay offer.

Some 97 percent of almost 2,000 Unite union members voted against the offer in a consultative ballot.

The company was offering workers a below-inflation increase of 2.21 percent with significant strings attached for bonuses and overtime.

Unite has agreed to talks with the firm at the same time as preparing a ballot for industrial action.

A walkout would send shockwaves through the industry.
