Bahrain: protests and solidarity

Issue No. 2299

The Formula One grand prix race is due to take place in Bahrain this week despite the continuing government crackdown on protests there.

The regime has used brutal force to crush the revolt since it broke out in February last year. Protests have continued even as many activists have been imprisoned and tortured.

On Monday two young Bahraini campaigners, Ali Mushaima and Moosa Abd Ali, took to the roof of the Bahrain Embassy in London to protest against the regime’s actions. Ali is the son of opposition leader Hassan Mushaima, who was has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

John Yates, former assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, is now a Bahraini government advisor. He welcomes the grand prix—saying Bahrain’s police act with “remarkable restraint”.
