Taliban springs attacks

Issue No. 2299

Afghanistan’s capital Kabul has been hit by a series of brazen attacks by the Taliban rebel group. The attacks have exposed the weaknesses of Hamid Karzai’s Western-backed government.

On Sunday of last week the Taliban entered the eighth floor of an unfinished Kabul building to aim rockets and rifles at Nato’s military headquarters a few hundred yards away.

They also struck the Afghan parliament. At least seven targets were hit in the east of the country.

The Taliban said that these attacks were the dawn of the group’s “spring offensive”.

The attacks have been deeply embarrassing for the US-led occupation of Afghanistan—Kabul is supposed to be the best-protected area of the country.
