London council accused of ‘cleansing’ the poor

Issue No. 2300

Up to 500 families on housing benefit in east London could find themselves relocated to Stoke-on-Trent if Newham Council has its way.

Over 28,000 people are on waiting lists for council housing in Newham but there are just 600 properties available.

Now the council wants to move people further afield.

Private rents have rocketed thanks in part to the Olympic site in the borough.

The government’s cap on housing benefit is piling pressure on claimants in London.

And Newham’s Labour council has failed to build council houses.
