Police taser man with Alzheimer's

Issue No. 2303

Police fired tasers at a man with Alzheimer’s—after they were called out to help take him to hospital.

Terrified Peter Russell lashed out at six officers because he didn’t understand what was going on.

In response, the police shot the 58 year old with tasers several times and bundled him into a police van.

But Superintendent Christine Kelk said, “I’m incredibly proud of the way our officers reacted.”

Thankfully police guarding the queen’s jubilee have also been issued with tasers.

Tasers are often called “non‑lethal”. But a study by the American Heart Association shows how they can kill. It says a taser to the chest can cause cardiac arrest.

Dr Douglas Zipes said, “What I want people to be aware of is that there is the potential for death.”

Amnesty says that over 500 people have died in the US after being shocked with the weapon.
