Greece left vote could surge again

Issue No. 2303

Syriza's Alexis Tsipras

Greece’s ruling class has every reason to be worried about new elections.

In the working class areas of greater Athens the left’s combined vote reached as much as 50 percent.

In some places Syriza came first, followed by the Communist Party—leaving New Democracy and Pasok trailing far behind.

Workers in Greece have been through long and tough struggles and will not easily allow the leadership of the left to compromise.

Opinion polls say that if there is a repeat election there will be a new swing to the left.

They predict that Syriza would be the overall winner of the election with 23 percent of the vote.
