Media workers round-up

Unions representing workers at the BBC have settled their dispute. Workers were being balloted for strikes but NUJ, Bectu and Unite officials have backed off from a walkout.

They have settled on a derisory 1 percent pay off and some assurances on job security. A strike could have won much more.

Journalists and media workers at BBC Wales were set to strike on Friday of this week.

NUJ and Bectu union members in Cardiff voted to strike over the victimisation of Bectu rep Heidi Williams. Workers say that she was sacked because of her union activities.

The strike will disrupt the BBC’s coverage of the Olympic torch coming to Cardiff.

Bectu and NUJ members have begun a strike ballot at Associated Press. Bosses at the company are eradicating one of their pensions scheme.

Some 200 workers will be affected. The ballot will close on Friday of next week.
