The 'British values' of racism

by Anindya Bhattacharyya
Issue No. 2305

British values are invariably touted as a magic potion to bind Britain back into one nation.

And the revival of a servile “God Save the Queen” popular culture goes hand‑in‑hand with another theme—attacking multiculturalism, which we are told has “failed”.

“Multiculturalism” here means, quite simply, anti-racism.

The mantra is that too much multiculturalism has created divisions in our society.

But the proposed cure amounts to a dose of racism.

This may be sugarcoated in warm words about “community cohesion” that will heal our wounds and bring us back together.

That is why New Labour brought in its absurd “citizenship tests” for immigrants.

It is why Muslims are regularly stigmatised as an “enemy within”, a foreign threat to British values.

Prime minister David Cameron attacked multiculturalism last year and specifically blamed Muslims for refusing to accept “British values”.

On the same day the English Defence League (EDL) marched in Luton and applauded him.

This new promotion of Britishness runs from New Labour through Cameron’s Tories right to the fascists of the BNP and EDL. It is thoroughly rancid.

And the jubilee celebrations are part and parcel of it.

That is why socialists and all those who fight for a better world should proudly reject British nationalism, monarchy and all celebrations of them.
