Baggage handlers put their case
Swissport baggage handlers at Stansted airport struck for all four days of the long weekend last week. The workers, in the Unite and GMB unions, are fighting plans to make them work 14 extra days a year with no extra pay.
Housing workers ballot for strikes
Around 80 workers in the Unite union at the Queen’s Cross housing association in Glasgow are being balloted for strikes after rejecting a derisory pay offer.
Workers have already voted two to one for strikes in a consultative ballot. They have been offered a below-inflation pay rise of 1.5 percent.
FBU calls off South Yorkshire ballot
The Fire Brigades Union has suspended a ballot for industrial action in South Yorkshire. The union had given seven days’ notice of the ballot for action short of a strike over cuts. But it has called it off for talks.
Protest is called to stop extraditions
The campaigns to stop the extradition of Babar Ahmad, Syed Talha Ahsan, Gary McKinnon and Richard O’Dwyer to the US have called a protest in June.
It will be held between 1pm and 3pm on Saturday 23 June in Whitehall, outside Downing Street. The protest is organised by the We Are Babar Ahmad campaign. wearebabarahmad.org
Tamils say no to president’s visit
Thousands of Tamils were set to protest in London on Wednesday of this week, at a speech by Sri Lanka’s president Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Rajapaksa, who has been invited to the queen’s jubilee celebrations, presided over “crimes against humanity”.
Hundreds protested when he arrived at Heathrow airport last Sunday.
Protest against Olympic missiles
A demonstration was set for Saturday of this week against missiles being stationed in Oxleas Wood, south London as “security” for the Olympics.
On Thursday of last week 150 people attended a meeting in Bow, east London, on the same subject.
