Scottish independence

AROUND 1,000 people attended a rally in support of the declaration for an independent Scottish republic in Edinburgh last Saturday.

The rally, initiated by the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), was in protest at the £500,000 state opening of the new Scottish Parliament building by the queen.

The declaration calls for “an independent Scottish republic built on the principles of liberty, equality, diversity and solidarity”. At the rally, the warmest reception was for denunciations of the war in Iraq, support for asylum seekers, and condemnations of the monarchy.
