Coryton oil refinery closure protests

Around 40 workers protested outside Coryton oil refinery in Essex on Monday and Tuesday of this week against the planned closure of the plant—which will see 850 workers sacked.

The workers had been told the refinery would be bought and would continue as normal. But in the last week the bosses have said it is closing.

Dave, a process operator at plant said, “The arbitrators promised us support but we’ve got nothing.

“They’ve pulled the rug from under our feet.”

Tony has worked at the plant for 21 years. “People are devastated, especially young ones” he said.

“Many working here are in their 20s and 30s with kids and mortgages. They don’t know what to do.”
