Art of West Africa comes to Manchester's galleries

A festival of art and music from West Africa has arrived in Manchester. We Face Forward draws its title from words uttered by Ghana’s first president Kwame Nkrumah in 1960.

He said, “We face neither east nor west, we face forward”—declaring the nation’s independence from both Washington and Moscow.

The show’s logo is by Benin‑born artist Meshac Gaba. It combines flags of the African nations represented in the show with that of Britain.

The borders between different flags are unclear—and they all converge at a single disappearing point.

We Face Forward includes events and exhibitions at Whitworth Art Gallery, the Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery. Admission to the art exhibitions is free.

We Face Forward. Various venues until 16 September
