Recycling workers in Sheffield are preparing to escalate their strike campaign on Saturday of this week.
The 29 GMB union members work for Veolia Recycling Centres. They have been striking against proposals to cut opening hours at the five sites in the city.
Veolia wants to close the sites to the public during the week, resulting in job losses and cuts to hours and pay for workers who are amongst the lowest paid in the city.
Sheffield council gives Veolia £941,000 to run the service, and Veolia gives subcontractor SOVA £600,000 to run the sites.
The sites generate over £900,000 through the recycling operation, giving SOVA plenty of money to keep them. But they are making cuts to increase their profits at a time when collections are being cut.
Workers have struck a number of times over the last three weeks and intend to start an all-out strike starting this Saturday.
They need messages of support and donations from the wider trade union movement.
