Hundreds picket against greedy pie boss

Hundreds of workers have been picketing the RF Brookes pie factory in South Wigston, Leicester, over plans to slash redundancy pay.

RF Brookes was taken over by the 2 Sisters Food Group in December of last year. It produces chilled foods for Marks and Spencer supermarkets.

It now plans to make 193 of its 450 workers redundant—including all of the union stewards. It also wants to cut redundancy pay in some cases by thousands of pounds.

The workers, who are members of the BFAWU bakers’ union, struck on Thursday and Friday of last week and again this Monday and Tuesday.

“The picket line is phenomenal, unlike any I’ve ever been on,” BFAWU president Ian Hodson told Socialist Worker.

“There are about 200 pickets. People are cooking and playing bhangra drums.

“There’s a fantastic sense of solidarity. The workers know they need to stand up for themselves and look after each other.”

Pickets chanted in Hindi against boss Veepul Patel.

They plan to strike again from next Thursday to the following Tuesday.
