Strike to block school academy in Nottinghamshire

by John Shemeld
Issue No. 2308

Some 30 teachers in the NUT union picketed outside Kimberley School, Nottinghamshire, when they struck on Wednesday and Thursday of last week.

They are fighting to stop the school becoming an academy.

The teachers are livid that the original decision not to make the school an academy has been reversed. “This is a good school, it’s nice to work here, and we don’t want it to change,” said one of them.

This two-day strike followed a previous one-day strike. One teacher told Socialist Worker she was “willing to do whatever it takes”.

Supporters joining the picket line included two local Labour councillors

The school remained open, but two of the younger year groups had been told to stay at home.

The teachers plan to strike again this week.
