Comrade Andy Sharp from Crewe sadly died on 27 May 2012. Andy was a bus driver and a T&G union steward and branch secretary, and was also president of Crewe & District Trades Council for many years.
I first met him in 2002, when we set up a Defend Council Housing group in Crewe and Nantwich to try and stop stock transfer.
Andy was a Labour Party member, and joined the Socialist Workers Party in 2002. He encouraged everybody he met to get organised and to fight against oppression and injustice—and led by example.
He was a founding member of Crewe & Nantwich Unite Against Fascism, and ran a campaign in a county council by‑election in 2004 which forced the BNP candidate to stand down.
Over the past few years Andy’s health gradually got worse with diabetes and other health problems. But he carried on regardless, attending meetings and conferences and even encouraging his carers and hospital staff to fight back against public service cuts.
Andy’s partner Pam Stepp is also a socialist and supported him through everything, despite her own health problems.
Andy is sorely missed but his legacy carries on.
