A striking miner from Spain is on his way to speak at the Unite the Resistance conference in London this Saturday.

For three weeks Segundo Menéndez Collar has been striking alongside 8,000 other miners in the Asturias region of northern Spain. They face a conservative government whose cuts could end mining in the region.

“These cuts would mean the ruin of entire communities,” Segundo told Socialist Worker. “Thousands of families would be left without work and thrown out onto the street.”

As well as fighting heroic running battles with police, the miners have inspired thousands of others to join their struggle. This included a regional general strike on Monday.

“Even the shops shut in our support,” said Segundo. “Everyone recognised that our strike was part of a fight for their survival.”

Now he is looking forward to making links with other workers at Saturday’s conference. “Across Europe there are common forms to our struggles,” he said. “An economic model is being imposed that can only bring ruin to Europe—and possibly to the whole world.”

But Segundo believes the resistance of workers across Europe can turn the tide. “If we didn’t think it made a difference, none of us would be doing this,” he said. “The only struggle that can’t be won is the one that isn’t fought.”

The Unite the Resistance conference takes place on Saturday 23 June at Bloomsbury Baptist Church, 235 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8EP. To book your place go to
