‘We want a world of happiness’

Issue No. 1923a

Haidi Giuliani received a prolonged standing ovation from hundreds of people as she welcomed them to the ESF last night.

Haidi is the mother of Carlo Giuliani, the young protester murdered by police at the Genoa G8 protest in 2001.

She was speaking at a rally held by the International Socialist Tendency, the international grouping of revolutionary organisations that the Socialist Workers Party is part of.

“We are fighting not just for justice, but for a world of happiness,” she said.

The speeches and discussion that followed identified the centrality of the Iraq war to world politics, and the way the movement is leading to increasing calls for a political alternative to the discredited mainstream parties.

A speaker from the Netherlands apologised that the rest of her delegation had not yet arrived. “This is due to a strike across public transport,” she said to cheers.
