Sean Rigg inquest

Issue No. 2311

The senior officer at the scene of Sean Rigg’s death, PC Andrew Birks, was accused of a cover-up at the inquest into Sean’s death.

Sean died in Brixton police station in August 2008 after being restrained and arrested.

The lawyer for Sean’s family accused Birks of radioing updates to the police operator to cover his own tracks while Sean lay unconscious.

Birks denied this. He said, “It wasn’t apparent to me until he urinated himself and collapsed, then I realised there was a medical issue and I got medical help straight away.”

Sean was not examined until half an hour after he arrived at the station. At this point the forensic police examiner recorded that he appeared “lifeless” on the floor.

The inquest continues.
